Misc Notes and Observations |
| I hope this has been helpful to you, allthough there are many options when doing the Astro V-8 conversion, I have included what worked for me . I hope it saves you time and money and a lot of the headaches I went through. Below I am including many things you may overlook ( as I did) when factoring in your costs. | |||

Misc Bits and Pieces |
In addition to the bigger and pricier things keep in mind the little things like: |
| Hoses, Upper and Lower Radiator and heater hoses and the clamps to secure them. Vacuum line and fittings, fuel line, fittings and clamps. | |||
Belts, either individual or a serpentine single belt, depending on which way you went.Buy quality, this is an area you don't want to scrimp. I used a Gatorback premium serpentine belt, saving 5 bucks looks pretty lame when you find yourself changing a belt(s) on the side of the road |
| Fluids: Oil and Antifreeze, having a scare with my dog drinking some coolant that dripped out of my overflow last year I now spring for the extra bucks and use non glycol , environmentally friendly coolant. It's a bit pricier then the other stuff but what I save in Vet bills and the trauma of almost losing my pup is worth it.I use Castrol but any quality oil brand name oil is good . GM advices using conventional 30w for the break-in, after 500 miles and filter change they allow synthetics without voiding the warranty . | |||
Filters: Oil , Fuel, and Air, and PVC Valve- I like Fram, some like others, again, your choice |
PV Blaster, great stuff for loosening bolts, and believe me, I went through many cans of it getting the old engine and tranny out. |
| Sensors/Sending Units: Buy new coolant temperature sensor and oil sending units. They aren't that expensive and much cheaper then another engine so using the old ones is rather foolish. Use the 4.3 V-6 Astro sensors, they will fit the 350 and that way you match your original wiring harness plugs. | |||
| High temperature heat shielding-It comes in rolls and it comes in sheets, I bought both. I wrapped my starter as it sits right below the collectors on the headers and wrapped my brake lines and fuel lines as they run in a bundle under and behind the headers. | |||
Gasket sealer, locktite, antiseize compound, hand Cleaner, LOTS and LOTS of Hand Cleaner and rags. The list goes on and on and I may have left out a few things but if you don't have them on hand you'll need them later when you are in the middle of your install. Plus, it's the little things you didn't count on that will break the bank when you get into your project, I know it broke me.lol. |
